What is xwOBA (Expected wOBA) in MLB Betting?

xwOBA (Expected Weighted On-Base Average) is Statcast's measure of what a hitter's wOBA should be based on the exit velocity and launch angle of every batted ball. It strips BABIP luck out of wOBA, making it the single most predictive hitter metric in modern baseball.

What xwOBA Measures

xwOBA uses Statcast's per-batted-ball data (exit velocity + launch angle) to assign each ball in play an expected outcome based on how similar batted balls have historically performed. A 105 mph line drive at 18° launch angle falls for a hit more often than not historically, so it gets credited with that expected value regardless of what actually happened (caught, beat the shift, dropped in).

The formula sums those expected outcomes per plate appearance and applies the same run-value weights as wOBA. Walks, HBP, and Ks count the same as in wOBA (no contact, no Statcast data). Only balls in play use the expected-value substitution.

Why xwOBA Beats wOBA

wOBA is what happened. xwOBA is what should have happened. The difference is luck, the defensive plays, shift positioning, weak-grounder seeing-eye singles, and crushed liners that flew right at fielders. By stripping luck out, xwOBA predicts FUTURE wOBA better than past wOBA does.

A hitter running .280 wOBA but .340 xwOBA is hitting the ball well but getting unlucky. He'll regress UP. A hitter at .340 wOBA but .290 xwOBA has been lucky and will regress DOWN. The market is slow to adjust to xwOBA-vs-wOBA gaps; sharp bettors catch the regression early.

How to Read xwOBA

Same scale as wOBA:

.400+: elite contact quality (rare)
.370-.400: All-Star tier
.340-.370: above average
.315-.340: league average
Below .290: poor contact

xwOBA-wOBA Gap as a Signal

xwOBA > wOBA by 30+ points: hitter has been unlucky. Likely positive regression coming. Bet OVER on that side's runs.
xwOBA = wOBA (within 15 points): outcomes match contact quality. No regression signal.
xwOBA < wOBA by 30+ points: hitter has been lucky. Likely negative regression. Bet UNDER on that side.

For pitchers: opposing xwOBA vs opposing wOBA tells the same story in reverse. A pitcher allowing high xwOBA but low wOBA is getting bailed out by defense and will regress worse.

xwOBA Limits

xwOBA is contact-quality only. It doesn't account for:

Ballpark. A well-struck fly ball can clear the fence in a small park and die on the warning track in a big one. xwOBA gives both the same expected value. Combine xwOBA with park factor for full picture.
Defense. Strong defenses (high OAA) consistently outperform xwOBA-implied outcomes.
Weather. Cold air, wind, humidity all alter ball flight. xwOBA assumes neutral conditions.

How Bookie Bullies Uses xwOBA

Confirmed-lineup xwOBA is one of the model's inputs. When lineups are posted, the model averages each lineup hitter's season xwOBA against a .320 anchor and adds the gap between the two lineups to the moneyline run margin. It does not split lineup xwOBA by pitcher handedness or track xwOBA-wOBA gaps.
